Three massage guns: Therabody Theragun Pro (Gen. 5), Ekrin B37S, and the Renpho R4 Pro.
We found through our evaluation that many massage guns are easy to use, but users may still find it difficult to reach their upper and middle backs by themselves.

A percussive massager—sometimes known as a massage gun—offers a way to mimic some aspects of a deep tissue massage in your own home, without needing to enlist a massage therapist. These powered devices have a pulsating tip that can dig into muscles, work out knots, and relieve pain.

“Some people like to use massage guns as warm-up devices, some people like to use them for post-exercise soreness reduction,” says Paul Ritchey, doctor of public health and a human factors and ergonomics specialist in CR’s Consumer Experience and Usability Research program.

In recent years, people have also begun using these increasingly popular devices to temporarily alleviate the soreness associated with not only exercise but also the physical stress and stiffness from sitting in a chair all day. Consumer Reports evaluated 14 different percussive massagers made by Ekrin, Hyperice, Renpho, Therabody, and Toloco, ranging in price from $50 to $500. Though we refer to these devices as massage guns, not all of them come with the pistol grip or index finger trigger typically associated with the term.

For our evaluation, we looked at how consumers use massage guns to relieve discomfort. We then examined the handle ergonomics of each device, looked at how much stress it would put on a person as they used the device, and evaluated factors such as overall ease of use and device noise. We also asked consumers who own these devices to give us their impressions of each device in a user study.
