There are lots of great reasons to buy a desktop computer. It may not move with you from room to room like a laptop, but dollar for dollar it typically delivers more power, more storage, and more flexibility when it comes to upgrading components.

Desktop computers are frequently paired with bigger displays and more spacious keyboards, too, which can be much gentler on your body, especially over long stretches of time.

    More on the Home Office

More screen real estate can make you more productive as well. “When I want to sit and do my bills, I use my desktop,” says Richard Fisco, who oversees electronics testing at Consumer Reports. “I don’t have to—I have a laptop sitting at my kitchen table—but my wife and I will go through a big spreadsheet together and do our banking on our desktop.”

Because of their value and customizability, desktop PCs are often the computers of choice for gamers, photo and video editors, and spreadsheet crunchers alike.

At Consumer Reports, we group desktop computers into three categories: full-sized, compact, and all-in-one.

Below you’ll find some of the best desktop computers in our ratings, available to CR members, listed by Overall Score.

    Best Full-Sized Desktop Computers

Full-sized desktops typically come in the form of a tower that takes up a lot of space but is easy to upgrade with additional memory, storage, and other components. They don’t always include a monitor, mouse, or keyboard. (CR has tested monitors, ergonomic keyboards, and ergonomic mice separately.)

    Best Compact Desktop Computers

Compact desktops require less room but also give you less flexibility. For example, the tiny Apple Mac Mini performs very well in our tests, but users can’t upgrade the memory or storage. And models like these don’t always include a monitor, mouse, or keyboard.

    Best All-in-One Desktop Computers

All-in-one desktops resemble a computer monitor, with the internal components located behind the display. They tend to have a sleek design with small bezels surrounding the monitor. They can be a good choice for consumers who want a powerful option to plop on a desk with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse all included.

    How CR Tests Desktop Computers

Consumer Reports tests dozens of desktop computers every year at our facilities just north of New York City. There, our team of experts run each desktop through an array of rigorous tests designed to assess its strengths and weaknesses. These tests include benchmarks to gauge the computers’ raw performance, assessing the quality of the display, and evaluating the ergonomics of any included mice and keyboards.
