Best TVs of 2024

Consumer Reports tests hundreds of TVs each year. These 4K sets from Hisense, LG, Samsung, Sony, and other brands deliver great picture quality.

For many people, getting a new big-screen TV is a great way to start the year, especially if they can score a great deal. And right now, many 2023 sets are at their lowest prices ever.

Prices should continue to drop for a few more months, as retailers clear inventories of older sets to make room for 2024 sets.

Below, we list the best TVs you can buy right now. Keep checking back because we’re continuing to test new TVs as they come on the market. (CR tests hundreds of TVs each year.)

    More on TVs

We’re spotlighting sets with 65-inch screens. You can also find smaller, less expensive versions of most of these models, and most are also available in bigger screen sizes.

The best TVs in CR’s testing tend to be pricier flagship models. But for people who want to spend less, we’ve also included some great sets that perform almost as well as the top models but cost less than $1,000. (Information on specific models, along with our full TV ratings, is available to CR members.)

At this time of year, prices change fairly regularly. It pays to see whether a retailer offers a 30-day price guarantee, which will help protect against price drops in the weeks after you’ve made your purchase.

    Best TVs Overall

You can’t go wrong with any of these top-performing TVs. They offer top-notch overall picture quality, a great high dynamic range (HDR) experience, and either very good or excellent sound. Even models with slightly lower Overall Scores still have top picture quality and HDR scores, but they may have earned lower marks in other areas, such as viewing angle or sound quality. (You can improve the sound on almost any TV by adding a soundbar.)

Best 65-Inch TVs for Under $1,000

The best TVs tend to be pricey, but there are some really good performers that cost less than $1,000. The six models listed below prove that point. All deliver very good to excellent overall picture quality, and half can deliver a satisfying HDR experience. The list includes a mix of 2022 and 2023 sets. You don’t have to choose one of the 2023 TVs to get a great viewing experience.

No printed manual is included.
ABOUT UHD TESTINGUltra-high definition "UHD" can refer to both the TV and program content. While the UHD industry standard includes 4K and 8K, most UHD TVs and UHD content at this time are 4K. A 4K UHD image is presented as 3840 x 2160 pixels—four times the pixel-count of HD. We test UHD TV picture quality using 4K UHD movies, videos, photos, and test patterns to confirm these displays deliver performance to this format's full potential. We examine the TV's ability to reproduce 4K UHD image detail, as well as high dynamic range (HDR)—for TVs that support this capability. Image quality is tested using a UHD movie player connected to the TV's HDMI input, and from files stored on USB flash drive. We also check how well the TV can upscale HD movies to the display's higher UHD resolution while keeping artifacts such as "jaggies" along the edges of image content to a minimum. The best UHD TVs, and HDTVs, present high fidelity images that reveal the full quality of the best source content without degradation.
"predictedReliability10PtScore":6
Predicted brand reliability ratings are based on estimated problem rates for newly purchased TVs, by the end of the 5th year of ownership
predictedOwnerSatisfaction10PtScore":5
Brand owner satisfaction ratings are based on the proportion of members who are extremely likely to recommend their TV to their friends and family.
Optimized Picture Settings
PICTURE SETTINGS
Picture Mode: FILMMAKER MODE
Aspect Ratio: Direct
Contrast: 49
Black Level: 0
Gamma: 2.4
Color: 52
Hue: R2
Sharpness: 0
Color Temperature: WARM 1
Brightness: 33
Local Dimming: Medium
Motion Enhancement: Custom (Blur Reduction: 10)
Color Space: AutoAll other settings should be set to "off" or zero "0". The settings shown are available when your playback device (i.e. cable box) is connected to the TV's HDMI input. Some settings may not be adjustable when streaming videos directly on the TV. To access the picture controls find the Menu, Home, Settings, or "Gear" icon on your remote or on-screen display, and navigate to the picture settings menu where you'll see most of the controls. To find some other controls you may additionally have to enter the "advanced settings" or the "picture options" sub-menus (name may vary depending on model). Don't worry about making any "mistakes." You can always reset the picture settings to factory default if necessary. Consult your user manual for additional guidance.
ABOUT CR's OPTIMIZED PICTURE SETTINGS:

Our fine-tuned picture adjustments are made with the support of special test patterns and reference videos to yield the best image fidelity. A professionally calibrated reference display is used for comparison. Whether you are watching movies on Blu-ray or sports from your cable box, these settings will ensure you are seeing the programs in the best quality that the model can offer, short of a professional calibration. When we optimize the image, we typically turn off special features (or turn down their settings) that can degrade performance, including power saving modes (which often dim the image), sharpness, noise reduction (also known as DNR, a feature that can degrade image detail), and "motion smoothing," if present (an effect that can give movies a soap-opera video-like appearance). Optimal settings for your TV may vary a bit from ours due to slight variations between similar samples, or due to a newer version of the TV's firmware.
ABOUT CR's TV VIEWING CONDITIONS:

Our picture settings are optimized for a darker viewing environment. If you are viewing primarily in a brightly-lit room, we suggest raising the Backlight control (not the Contrast) to brighten the image to a level that looks suitable. Additionally, you may want to lower the Gamma setting (if available) by one or two increments to better reveal darker shadow detail. If the settings we recommend don't suit your taste or your viewing environment, use the picture controls to achieve an image you consider "just right.\
Evaluated using basic HD content (non-HDR). Very Good contrast—the difference between the darkest blacks and brightest whites—gave images convincing depth and dimension. This was among the brightest models we've tested (with the backlight control turned up), so the picture was well suited for a very sunny room—a lower setting is recommended for a dimmer viewing environment. Its reproduction of smooth edges on image content for "up-converted" HD-to-UHD images was Very Good with minimal "jaggies" (jagged edges). Deinterlacing 1080i video, and detecting the film mode of 1080i film-based content, were both Excellent. For color, contrast and black level, the TV performed similarly to its HD picture quality.

HIGH DYNAMIC RANGE (HDR) PERFORMANCE HDR performance had limited effectiveness. In HDR mode this TV only allowed us to optimize the Brightness and Gamma picture settings—all other settings were as they were for the standard-dynamic range (SDR) HD picture. In our tests, the display showed Good peak brightness capability (by HDR standards) and did a fine job displaying the benefits of our HDR 4K content. It revealed only a little contrast between moderately bright and very bright highlights, while the brightness levels in the mid-to-lower tones, like those in an indoor scene, were preserved. It did a good job reproducing a greater range of nuanced shadow detail, from black to white, with no obvious banding within the gradually shaded areas, but we noted some loss of detail within the highlights of the brightest areas. Brightly colored objects remained nicely saturated.

VIEWING ANGLE This Sony model has a narrow viewing angle overall, below-average performance among TVs. Only those seated directly in front of the screen will see the best picture quality. We examined the image quality at various viewing angles—its image quality notably decreased as we moved away from the center position. In our tests, the picture did show some slight dimming from the sides, but not to a distracting degree. When we viewed the TV from the sides image quality degraded significantly. The picture showed a moderate loss of color, so flesh tones looked a bit washed out. Black levels visibly brightened, and reduced the contrast especially on dark scenes. Lastly, we viewed the image from above and below center screen, and noticed Good vertical viewing angle performance, with only slight changes in color, contrast, and black level.

"predictedReliability10PtScore":9
Predicted brand reliability ratings are based on estimated problem rates for newly purchased TVs, by the end of the 5th year of ownership
predictedOwnerSatisfaction10PtScore":9
Brand owner satisfaction ratings are based on the proportion of members who are extremely likely to recommend their TV to their friends and family.
Optimized Picture Settings

PICTURE SETTINGS

Picture mode: Custom

Aspect Ratio: Full (Display area: Full pixel)

Contrast: 90

Black level: 49

Gamma: -2

Color: 51

Hue: G2

Sharpness: 30

Color temperature: Expert 1

Brightness: 17

Motionflow: Custom (Smoothness: 3)

CineMotion: Low

HDR mode: Auto

HDMI video range: Auto

Color space: Auto

All other settings should be set to "off" or zero, "0".

Any individual R, G, or B color subcontrols, if present, should remain at their default settings.

TV FIRMWARE All models are evaluated using the latest firmware version available at the time of testing. Only those seated directly in front of the screen will see the best picture quality. We examined the image quality at various viewing angles--its image quality notably decreased as we moved away from the center position. In our tests, the picture did show moderate dimming from the sides. When we viewed the TV from the sides image quality degraded significantly. The picture showed a moderate loss of color, so flesh tones looked a bit washed out. Black levels visibly brightened, and reduced the contrast especially on dark scenes. Whether you're watching a blockbuster movie, a concert, or TV show, it can to deliver a satisfying listening experience. In our listening evaluations, we found the bass (low frequencies) was moderately deep and provided some sense of fullness.but lacked definition. Treble (high frequencies) was satisfactory. The overall sound was closed in. This TV should be OK in rooms large or small, noisy or quiet--we found the speakers could play at a fairly loud volume level and quality did degrade at the highest settings.

LCD TVs vs. OLED TVs

Before you decide on a new set to purchase, it pays to understand the two basic technologies used in today’s televisions. LCD TVs (also called LED TVs) have LED backlights that illuminate the screen, while in OLED TVs each pixel generates its own light.

OLED sets do a great job of displaying the blackest parts of an image, so the deepest shadows can really look black, as in real life, rather than gray. OLED TVs also have essentially unlimited viewing angles, so the picture still looks great even if you’re not viewing the screen head-on.

Last year Samsung and Sony introduced a new type of OLED TV, called QD-OLED, that can produce a brighter overall image. (CR has conducted side-by-side testing of OLED and QD-OLED TVs.) And this year LG, which makes OLED TVs using a different technology (called WOLED), is promising to boost brightness on its best models.

But most TVs are LCD sets. While they generally can’t deliver OLED-like black levels, they get better every year, especially models that use full-array backlights, where the LEDs are spread across the entire rear panel instead of just along the edges. These models include a feature called local dimming, which divides the backlights into zones that can be dimmed or illuminated separately, depending on the scene. This can help improve black levels.

Some newer sets have Mini LED backlights, which use a large number of even smaller LEDs that can be divided into more zones and locally dimmed. We’ve found that Mini LEDs can help improve contrast and black levels, and reduce halos around the edges of bright objects displayed against a dark background.

Typically, only pricier TVs have full-array backlights with local dimming. Other sets are edge-lit, with the LEDs positioned on the sides of the screen. Some of these sets also include local dimming, but it tends to be less effective than in sets with full-array backlights. The best LCD TVs can create very bright, vivid images.

    How CR Tests TVs

We’ve made a few changes to our TV ratings in recent years. While overall picture quality and other characteristics remain important, we also include data privacy and security scores for all the TVs we test. Now that TVs routinely connect to the internet, data privacy and security have become concerns for consumers.

Consumer Reports evaluates the various ways TV brands collect, use, and share consumer data, how well they protect it, and how transparent they are about their data practices. We encourage TV makers to ship their sets to consumers with the optimal privacy settings turned on by default. You can adjust the settings yourself.

The TV test team at Consumer Reports puts every TV through a battery of tests in our TV labs. We first set up each TV and carefully note all of its key features, such as resolution, number of HDMI inputs, and support for streaming services and voice-enabled digital assistants. We then set up the TV for optimal performance using the set’s built-in presets and picture controls, just like you would. We use objective tests and measurements, as well real-world video clips and subjective evaluations, to determine picture detail, color accuracy, and contrast, and compare each TV with one of several fully calibrated reference TVs in our labs.

HDR, short for high dynamic range, is now found in the vast majority of midsized to large sets. HDR increases the contrast between the brightest whites and the darkest blacks a TV can produce. To do a good job with HDR video, a TV needs to get bright enough to display brighter, more colorful images with greater contrast and a wider array of colors, much closer to what we see in real life.

For HDR performance, we measure the TV’s peak brightness using a $40,000 Photo Research PR-740 spectroradiometer (also used for fine colors and deep black measurements), and industry standard and proprietary test patterns. We then evaluate the TV’s HDR performance with both very dark and very bright scenes, as well as with video clips that feature an extended range of colors.

We evaluate picture quality for clarity, color accuracy, and contrast at various horizontal and vertical viewing angles. Motion-blur tests, done at various speeds, are an evaluation of how well the TV can produce a blur-free image during motion scenes.

Sound quality is evaluated using the TV’s built-in speakers with subjective testing by a trained listening panel, with support from audio test equipment. In our judgments, we listen for the overall quality of sound, depth of bass, effective volume levels, and audible distortion during dialogue, music, and movie soundtracks. (Many TVs have disappointing sound in comparison to their image quality. You can address that by adding a soundbar.)

The versatility score is a measure of a TV’s useful features, including access to streaming services, the ability to work with digital voice assistants, the number of HDMI and USB inputs, and support for various media.
