Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram, is recalling more than 38,000 vehicles because their driver’s side airbags may not deploy in a crash.

Recalled vehicles include the 2023-2024 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 pickup trucks, 2023-2024 Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Wagoneer, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUVs, 2023-2024 Chrysler Pacifica minivans, 2023 Chrysler Voyager minivans, 2023 Jeep Gladiator pickup trucks, and 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Grand Cherokee L SUVs.

    MORE ON CAR RECALLS

The problem is due to an assembly issue that could cause the driver airbag module to disconnect. If this happens, drivers will see an airbag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel behind the steering wheel.

An airbag that does not deploy in a crash could result in an increased risk of injury. It also means vehicles are not in compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standards.

Chrysler, Jeep, and Ram dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the faulty part. As with all recalls, the repair will be free of charge.

The problem: The steering column control modules (SCCM) on these vehicles may have an insufficient weld between an internal flexible flat cable (FFC) and a busbar. As a result, the SCCM may not allow a deployment signal from the Occupant Restraint Controller to reach the driver airbag module, and the driver airbag may not deploy. As such, these vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208.

The fix: Dealerships will inspect and, if necessary, replace the SCCM, free of charge.

How to contact the manufacturer: Owners may contact Stellantis at 800-853-1403.

NHTSA campaign number: 24V199. Stellantis’ own numbers for this recall are 14B, 33B, 34B, 35B, and 36B.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you plug your car’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) into NHTSA’s website and a recall doesn’t appear, it means your vehicle doesn’t currently have any open recalls. Because automakers issue recalls often, and for many older vehicles, we recommend checking back regularly to see whether your vehicle has had a recall issued.
